Get Focused Quickly - Clear Your Water
July 21st, 2007Many times we arrive at practice with, what Cain call’s, cloudy minds. We are thinking about schoolwork, social issues, or the latest tunes we want to download. I know I went to workouts the other day thinking about my new iPhone…can’t help it…it’s cool. But, for the next two hours I needed to focus on my players and they needed to focus on the workouts
I hate admiting whne Cain is right….but, he was about this…I had to clear the water.
Here’s how Cain gets players to focus in less than two minutes? He uses a drill called “clearing the water,” which provides a visual image for quieting the mind. To start, he asks players to shut their eyes and imagine their minds as a glass of water fresh from the tap, cloudy with air bubbles. Next, he instructs to inhale deeply through their nose, drawing air into their belly. They then exhale slowly through the nose, imagining that with each exhale their minds become clearer and clearer, just like the glass of water does as the air bubbles disperse.
This process takes just 45 seconds to two minutes and pays large dividends in improving the quality of practice. It’s a short exercise that encourages players and coaches to focus on the here and now.
I did this the other day and it worked liked crazy.
Damm, Cain was right again. It kind of burns my butt to think about how good he is.
In just about 10 days we are launching Brian’s new coaching program…stay tuned. You’re not going believe what Cain is going to put out. I keep telling him he is nuts.
But, I’m not the one who had 7 first round picks this year…so…I guess I will listen to what he wants.
Best,
Paul Reddick
